Der Bandname Okemah ist zugleich der Name der kleinen Stadt Okemah im US-Bundesstaat Oklahoma, in der seit 1998 das Woody Guthrie Folk Arts Festival stattfindet.

Derry Grey ist vor 16 Jahren von der Steiermark nach Wien "ausgewandert" ist. Sein erster musikalischer Versuch war 1970 ein Bluesduo namens "Crusade", benannt nach einer LP von John Mayall, seinem damaligen Vorbild. 1972 war er Bluesharpplayer in einer Rockband. 1980 gründete Grey die Band Okemah und es folgten unzählige Auftritte, 9x Donauinselfest, über 20 Tonträger, USA und Irland Torneen und vieles mehr. Musikalisch von Folk bis Countryrock. "Walkin' on Beale Street" erschien nach einem Aufenthalt in Memphis/Tennessee auf einem der Alben. Der Bluestitel - vom ORF anläßlich "25 Jahre Ö3" live übertragen - erschien 2020 neu aufgenommen auch auf seiner Solo CD "Songs from the south" . Okemah haben schon zuvor CDs im Dialekt aufgenommen, etwa "Doppelt brennt" oder "Donau Mur Blues" mit Ulli Bäer als musikalischem Gast. Zum "45er" der Band erschien das neue Album mit 17 fast ausschließlich eigenen Songs. Okemah sind damit endlich beim Blues gelandet! Mit dazu beigetragen hat die neu zusammengestellte, exzellente Band rund um den Sänger & Bandleader Derry Grey. Die aktuelle CD "Wiener Blues" rundet die Sache sozusagen ab oder um es mit dem Text eines bekannten Folksongs zu sagen "Will the circle be unbroken - damit der Kreis sich schließt". Mit auf der Aufnahme und in der Liveformation neben Derry Grey die Wiener Akkordeon Legende Franz Haselsteiner, Stargeiger Adula Ibn Quadr und Jazz Drummer Wolfgang Hiebl (Barrelhouse und Burgundy Street Jazzbands), sowie Doc John Delanoy, Red Sonja und Norberto Pronto.
Das neue Album startet mit dem Titelsong "Weana Blues" über das "Bluesgefühl", das in jedem von uns vorhanden ist. Der zweite Titel handelt dann von einem Musiker in der Leopoldstadt, wo Derry Grey selbst lebt und an seiner Musik arbeitet. Der Text zu "A Steirer in Wean" stammt von der "Poetry Slam Legende" Günther "Tschif" Windisch, der leider schon verstorben ist. Er hat ihn extra für Derry Grey geschrieben. Mit "Ois ma jung worn" und "Guate oide Zeit" geht Derry weit in seine persönliche Vergangenheit zurück. "Trink ma mitanad a Glasl Wein" ist ein neuer "Heurigen" Blues für Wien. "Wann di Sunn nimma aufgeht" ein Cover von "House of the rising sun" mit neuem Dialekttext. Für den letzten Song auf dem Album hat Warner Chappell USA die Genehmigung erteilt, den wundervollen Johnny Cash Song "Forty shades of green" mit einem Dialekttext von Derry Grey und Johannes Dittler (co Autor) zu veröffentlichen. Musikalisch viel traditioneller Blues, folkige Klänge, bis hin zu leicht südamerikanischen Rhythmen.

The new album marks the band's 45th anniversary. With 17 songs, almost entirely original.
Okemah have finally arrived in the world of blues music! The newly formed, excellent band around singer and bandleader Derry Grey, who "emigrated" from Styria to Vienna 16 years ago, has contributed to this. His first musical venture, way back in 1970, was a blues duo called "Crusade," named after an LP by John Mayall, his idol at the time. Then, in 1972, he became a blues harmonica player in a rock band. In 1980, Grey founded the band Okemah, and countless performances followed, including nine appearances at the Donauinsel Festival, over 20 recordings, US and Ireland tours, and much more. The music ranged from folk to country rock. "Walkin' on Beale Street" appeared on one of the albums after a stay in Memphis, Tennessee. The blues song, broadcast live by ORF on the occasion of "25 Years of Ö3," was also re-recorded on his 2020 solo CD "Songs from the South." Okemah have previously recorded CDs in Austrian dialect, such as "Doppelt brennt" and "Donau Mur Blues" with Ulli Bäer as musical guest. The new CD "Wiener Blues" rounds things off, so to speak. Or to paraphrase the lyrics of a well-known folk song - "Will the circle be unbroken". Along with Derry Grey, Viennese accordion legend Franz Haselsteiner, star violinist Adula Ibn Quadr, and jazz drummer Wolfgang Hiebl (Barrelhouse and Burgundy Street Jazz Bands), as well as Doc John Delanoy, Red Sonja, and Norberto Pronto, are also featured on the recording and in the live lineup.

The CD starts with the title song, "Weana Blues," about the "blues feeling" that exists in each and every one of us. The second track is about a musician in Leopoldstadt, where Derry Grey himself lives and works on his music. The lyrics for "A Steirer in Wean" are by the "poetry slam legend" Günther "Tschif" Windisch, who sadly passed away. He wrote them especially for Derry Grey. With "Ois ma jung worn" and "Guate oide Zeit," Derry Grey delves deep into his personal past. "Trink ma mitanad a Glasl Wein" is a new "Heurigen" blues for Vienna (the typical "Viennese Heurige" are wine taverns, where the new, fresh wine from Viennese winemakers is served). "Wann di Sunn nimma aufgeht" is a cover of "House of the Rising Sun" with new dialect lyrics. For the last song, Warner Chappell USA has given permission to release the wonderful Johnny Cash song "Forty shades of green" with dialect lyrics by Derry Grey and Johannes Dittler (co-author). Musically, it features a lot of traditional blues, folk sounds, and even light South American rhythms.
